Swiming in Kalymnos

Telendos sunset

Only 1 km separates the island of Telendos from Kalymnos due to a great earthquake that shook in the zone in 554 year, since then you can only get there in boat trips or if you like swiming and Oceanic Posidonia meadows, throw yourself to the ocean and it will take you around 25 minutes to get to the quiet Telendos.

Greek gastronomy

Nice greek goat

All the island is full of goats and sheeps going around everywhere, even in the distant and bigest slopes. So every bar has good goat cheese, local beer and good honey.

Kalymnos archaeology

Yey on neolithic ruins

Through this island passed all the civilizations that have taken place throughout history, and there is some neolithic material dating human presence since 6000 years ago!!. Pieces of pottery, fortress and archeol remains are everywhere, indicating the strategic place that it was.

When to travel to Kalymnos

Mochuelo (Athene noctua)

Good thing about Kalymnos is that you can travel in any time of the year, warm mediterranean climate makes you feel not too cold even in winter time. Is the summer, July and August temperatures can be unbearable for climbing, what´s more are the most crowded months... but loads of fun!!

Greek people

Greek´s

Everybody in the island has allways a smail in their faces, they help you in everything you need and lot of people speak english or italian, sometimes you will need some mime, like us with this goatherd trying to explain him that we lost our cammera where the goats were living..., he just was laughing for a while!!.

Discovering Kalymnos

Agus no stress

Kalymnos is the forth biggest island of the dodecanese and as you can imagine is full of beaches and hidden corners that worth to be discovered. People usually looks for the places that are very close to the car, but if you walk a little bit further you´ll get to the best beaches where won´t be anybody even in the high season.

Climbing material in Kalymnos

The hanging´s Yey

It was in the 90´s when they began to equipe the first routes in Kalymnos, and people came to climb all its walls. In Masourii there is technical shops selling everything you could need and the prices are similar to Spain.

Climbing in Kalymnos

Agus climbing in Kaste

Climbing is one of the main attractions in the island, in its limestone walls, there are around 900 routes full equiped and for all levels, from begginers to experts. Depending on the season, you can find some routes in the shadow, some others protected against the wind, rain,... pure mediterranean luxury!!.

How to get to Kalymnos

Athens

If you are not in Greece you will have to go to Athens and take a flight from there with Olympic company to Kalymnos, you will have to take in account that the landing strip is short and it finishes in a big cliff, so with bad weather conditions the flight will be suspended but you can always fligh to Kos wich is 30 minutes boat trip to Kalymnos and that´s exactly what happened to us on our way back home, we had to go from Kalymnos to Kos in one ferry called "Ana Maria" wich is the only one that operates in bad weather conditions (it is a non legal boat), it will cost you around 20 €.

Where to sleep and eat in Kalymnos

Masuri´s village and Telendos in the background

Masouri village is where most accommodations offers are, from three stars hotels to beachfront apartments in wich you can pay around 45 €/apartment/day for four people (in low season). If you want to eat, there are many places but we reccomend PANOS, wich is managed by one family that will make you feel like in home and the food is excellent and quite a lot.

Getting around in Kalymnos

Yey climbing on the " desfiladero"

If you are plannig to get around the island best ways are renting one car, motorbyke or bycicle, because local busses don´t work very well. If your budget is not to high and you olny want climbing, trekking or swiming, from Masouri you can get to many sectors in less than half hour just walking.

Trekking in Kalymnos

Yey and Agus on the crest

Kalymnos is an island with peak altitude of 676 m and you can trekk around many places, including the crests, paths from north to south, although local maps are not very precise you can go up to anywhere you want. You just have to made it up and walk!.
