New Zealand's Moeraki Boulders
Submitted by Agustín Gómez on Thu, 07/04/2011 - 14:46Close by the coastline, 75 km up to the north of Dunedin, we found Moeraki´s village, with it´s rounded spheres scattered along the sea shore. These boulders are 65 millons years old and are formed by Calcium salts, you can also find some simillar stones around the world. We didn´t want to touch them!
Driving in New Zealand
Submitted by Agustín Gómez on Mon, 08/06/2009 - 08:06New Zealand south island is almost uninhabited, there are few cars in the roads, so after traveling for some days in our van, a typical conversation could be:
- How are you?
- I´m fine, why?
- Well... it should be better to drive on your left!!! We are in New Zealand!!!!
Driving fine
Submitted by Agustín Gómez on Fri, 31/10/2008 - 20:34We were driving our vann, no people, no traffic, good landscape... but we were 5 km faster than the maximun speed allowed. There is no people on the island but we run into these police agents! We tried to tell them that we were foreigners and bla bla bla... but after some months we got the bill in our home, back in Spain!... 100 euros!!
Flying over the Mount Cook
Submitted by Agustín Gómez on Fri, 31/10/2008 - 13:23Before getting to the Mount Cook National Park, you will find rental flights close to the Tekapo lake. Don´t even think about it... just rent it. It costs about 150 euros, but it does worth. From 4.000 meter high you will see the 72 glaciers, ice lakes and more than 140 summits above 2.000 meters... all combined with the ocean!. At night you can sleep close to the lake under the Mount Cook (3.754 m) summit.
Traveling New Zealand
Submitted by Agustín Gómez on Fri, 31/10/2008 - 13:10Here we are, "The Cousins" in the "mansion van" Fiat Ducato. We rent that van for one month, only 30 euros per day... hot shower, microwave, kitchen,... awsome!! High season prices could be increased four times. This is the best way to travel around the island, but you also can buy a used car and sell it before you leave the country, there is a big second hand market. You only have to be very careful if you are not used to drive on your left.
Okarito
Submitted by Agustín Gómez on Fri, 31/10/2008 - 12:44In the middle of the west coast we found this small and colorful village, called Okarito. It is a good place for enjoy the beach and the sunset, we were really lucky to see the last green ray from the sun right before the sunset (it is true!! it does exists when atmospheric conditions are the optimal ones). You also have a one hour trekk that will head you to the top of one hill with beautiful views, if you do this trekk at night and you are lucky you can see one of the few birds in the world that doesn´t fly and that is the New Zealand symbol: the Kiwi (Apteryx haastii).
Ascending the Franz Josep Glacier
Submitted by Agustín Gómez on Fri, 31/10/2008 - 12:37Franz Joseph glaciar trekk is just spectacular, you need to rent crampons and one guide who is going to guide you throught the different ice galleries. There is three options you can choose from, we recommend the longest because you will go to the summit.
New Zealand´s Trekks
Submitted by Viajes Desorgan... on Fri, 31/10/2008 - 12:15One of the most beautiful trekks in the world is the Milford Track, we tried to trekk it on August but it was avalanche dangerous, but if you go in another season don´t hesitate, do it!!. We did the Greenstone trekk, it is four days round trekk, with really good huts on the way with all facilities. You will find three meters ferns that have been there from the time of the dinosaurs.
