Backcountry skiing around Monte Perdido

The begining of the hike

This tour takes place within the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park, through the four valleys and gorges that make up the Park: Ordesa, Añisclo, Escuaín and Pineta. The starting point is the reservoir of Pineta, where we leave the car and climb on foot in a couple of hours until Montinier hut, where we spend the first night. The second night is spent under the three Marys, and last night we sleep in the Goriz Refuge.

Backcountry skiing around Monte Perdido. When to go.

Hiking to Portillón de Tella

Spring is the best season for this four days round trip, because there is snow over 1.500 m and the avalanche risk is minimun. Depending on the year, between March and April should be good time for coming.

GOODBYE UNCLE JUAN

Uncle Juan the traveler

We say goodbye to our uncle John "The Traveler", as he would have liked: SMILING.
Thanks for teaching us about the life and we hope that, wherever you are, you don't stop doing good magic tricks to amaze everyone!.
A big kiss from your little nephews.

Nights along the GR-11

Night at the shelter Goriz

While you make the GR-11 during the summer months, do not forget you're in the Pyrenees, and get ready, because you can get cold!. Changes in temperature between day and night, are usually quite sharp, so a reliable tent and a good sleeping bag, are essential to enjoy the night time along the Pyrenees.

Pyrenees GR-11 with your dog

Running into...

If you're walking by the GR11 with your dog, you have to take the dog tied when you enter to any of the Spanish National Parks and Nature Reserves areas that may apply, so as not to disturb the local fauna. Be careful if you cross into the French zone, at most of the French Pyrenees National Park don´t allow dogs. And go get your dog used to the saddle for at least take his food and blanket!

Dani flying over the Cuculo

Dani flying over the Cuculo

Up of our village there is this mountain called Cuculo, and right behind there is this hermitage called San Salvador, a place with spectacular views over the Pyrenees.
Here is Dani flying like a vulture heading to Berdún (you can see it far away)... he almost got to it!

Parachuting course (Skydiving) - Jump 7

Last jump in the course... here the instructor only watch he doesn´t do anything... but a nose pull!

Parachuting course (Skydiving) - Jump 6

There we go!
The back flip is one of the most exiting exercises in the course... you have to back flip in the air... is like doing it in the floor but a little higher, Good sensation!

Parachuting course (Skydiving) - Jump 5

This is the fifth jump of the course... jumping off the airplane like a bag!
This course is getting to the end and we encourage you to have this experience at least once in your live.

Parachuting course (Skydiving) - Jump 4

As the course progresses we will take confidence!
The exercises are a bit complicated and it's time to fly alone! without anybody that holds us all the time and instead of carrying two instructors, only one is with us.
The feelings can not be better, is flying, feel the air on your face and the speed of 200 km per hour make any gesture modify the stability and position in the air, it is awsome!
In this exercise we have to turn around dropping our hand a little bit and only with this gesture the whole body starts to turn... hope you enjoy it!

Parachuting course (Skydiving) - Jump 2

From the sky, things look different, for better and for worse!
Here we are on our second jump and in this exercise we have to get our arms close to the body making us going ahead. Because in the air we have 3 dimensions, when we get our arms close to the body, we go ahead, and of course we go down, we can´t avoid that!
The good thing in this video is that we can see some images in the background of the Pyrenees and if we look down we have a good view of Santa Cilia wich is where we live.

Parachuting course (Skydiving) - Jump 1

Do you like parachuting or you have ever think about flying...?
Accelerated Freefall skydiving is planned for falling 45 secs from 3.500 m or 4.000 m, always accompanied with 2 instructors that always are watching for you, holding you (tightly) in both sides... except in the landing.
We made the course in Parachuting Center Pirineos and you have 7 jumps, going alone from the first until the last one, making some exercises in the land before each jump.

Rock Ptarmigan in Ordesa

Ptarmigan in fall plumage

One of the most difficult animals to see in Ordesa and listed as a threatened species is the Rock Ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus).
There are very few couples living in the entire National Park and in winter time the plumage gets a white color blending with the snow and the rest of the year it blends with the rocks!

Winter excursion from the Ordesa´s meadow untill Soaso´s cirque

Reflejos en el valle de Ordesa

This is a simple excursion around the Ordesa´s and Monte Perdido National Park and you don´t need really good skills to acomplish it. It will take around 5 hours (roundtrip), and you can enjoy and relax with the stunning landscape.

Chamois or "Sarrios" in Ordesa

chamois

The chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) also named "sarrios" or "gamuzas", are the most commun mamals and it is easy to see them in winter time running downhill around the rocks and ice. Their feet are prepared for that but one of the greatest dangers for them are avalanches, sometimes entire groups are dead because of that.

Skiing from the Marboré to Góriz

Taking a break in Góriz

Best downhill skiing in the Ordesa´s National Park is from the summit of the Marboré mt. (3.248 m) untill Goriz refugee (2.200 m). It will take you around two and a half hours to get to the summit, and the downhill will depend on the hunger and desire that each one has to enjoy good fried eggs with potatoes in the shelter!

Ordesa´s Backcountry skiing. When to go.

Ordesa´s Valley

You need to be very careful when you go to backcountry skiing in Ordesa, there is plenty of avalanches, so it is better to get inform before, and stay away from the dangerous places. Normally after march the snow conditions get better and therfore more secure than winter time.

Monte Perdido in winter time

Monte Perdido´s south face

If you want to climb to Monte Perdido from Goriz it will take you around two and a half hours depending on the footprint and the weather. Don´t forget some mountain equipment if you want to belay somebody in the "escupidera" wich is the most committed segment of the route, you need to take care in this segment depending on the snow conditions, but if we take rope with us our mind will be relaxed and we will enjoy the landscape.

Heading Goriz across the Ordesa´s meadow

Ordesa´s Beech

One way to get to Goriz refugee in winter time is through the most common way, begining in the meadow, taking around three hours to get to the Soaso´s plugs. This way is recommended in winter time avoiding the avalanches track on the right side of the plugs. From the plugs it will take you around one hour and a half untill the refuge depending on the snow.

Goriz mountain refuge

Goriz mountain hut in Ordesa

Goriz mountain hut is open all year round, and it is important to book before and ask about the weather conditions before get there. Also you can ask them about the best way to get there depending on the season time, they know everything about it.
