Traveling from Cambodia to Vietnam

Phnom Penh Sunset

One of the most beautiful and economic way to go from Cambodia to Vietnam is taking a bus from Phnom Penh to the harbor (it will take you about an hour). From the harbor you can take a boat to Vietnam. Once you are in the boat, it will take you about 5 hours along the Mekong river, crossing the border in Chau doc. You will be amazed about the live in the Mekong... spectacular!

Angkor Wat - When to go

Angkor Wat´s dawn

The visit to the temples of Angkor Wat is spectacular and unique in the world, so it is a lot of the people you'll find in your days visiting the temples, so it is strongly recommended that you get up before dawn to freak out with the early morning light, or you change the strategy, going to all places in the last minute making sure that nobody is hanging around there, and the best thing is that the light is even more beautiful!

Phnom Penh - How to move around

Agus and Samu in Phnom Penh

To get around Phnom Penh city is no better way to get lost in their neighborhoods and streets with a bike, and while this all seems a bit chaotic, then you understand that the circulation is not that bad and on the right side the bikes are going in an imaginary lane meanwhile motorbikes and cars are located on the left. Grace comes when you want to make turn on a street placed on the left, then you have to move your arm and make the turn without hesitation!.

Sihanoukville Cambodian´s paradise

Sihanoukville - Cambodian´s beach

If you feel like having a bath and relax in the beach, from the capital Phnom Penh you can take a bus to the town of sihanoukville, which takes about 4 hours and costs $5 each way. You have a few beautiful beaches and is also the site of many Cambodians bath, but there are more and more hotels and hostels focused for tourism.

Khmer Rouge in Cambodia

Tuol Sleng museum in Phonm Penh

Between 1975 and 1978 in Cambodia was one of the greatest genocides in history with a total of 3 million murders carried out by the Khmer Rouge, the party that was established in the government ended with the Cambodian society. In Phnom Penh city you can take a look at the museum of Tuol Sleng, which was one of the largest schools in the capital and was turned into prison camp. A place not to forget what happened and would never happen again anywhere in the world.

Bayon´s Temple in Angkor Wat

Bayon temple´s faces

Just in the middle of the Angkor Wat temple is placed the Bayon´s temple, it has fifty four towers carved with smiling faces, facing to the four cardinal points. These faces represent buda, and there are no similar ones, because one half was carved by different people and the other half by another people... awesome!

Angkor Wat and the Banyan´s trees

Banyan´s trees in Cambodia

One of the most spectacular things in the Angkor Wat temples are Banyan´s trees, they can reach 100 m high and as they grow, aerial roots emerging getting into the cracks and rocks, pulling the old walls and destroying much of the ancient temple.

Cambodian´s people

Cambodian´s Monk

In Cambodia can be found various ethnic groups with their different dialects depending on where in the country you are, but their always are polite, kindness and have a big smile on their faces. In major cities you can find people who speak English, but if you go a little far way, the universal sign language will be your great ally unless you speak Cambodian or Khmer!.

Food in Cambodia

Fruit´s store in Cambodia

The food in Cambodia is quite varied with different fruit flavors, colors and shapes, a good variety of vegetables cooked with rich spices, meat such as chicken and various animals of the place, and fish in coastal areas. And if you enjoy trying out new sensations, in each bus station people are offering trays of spiders, bats, worms and a good variety of animals fried.

Ankor Wat´s Temple

Ankor Wat

Ankor Wat Temple is placed in the Siem Reap Cambodian province, and with it´s 200 km² is the biggest religious construction in the world, in the old days it was 3.500 km². It is to worth to spend at least two full days going around the different places, and if you rent a motorcycle it is easier, but if you have time, you better rent a bicycle in the hotel.

Where to sleep in Phnom Penh. Lazy Fish

Lake views from the Lazy Fish terrace

When you arrive to Phonm Penh, Cambodia´s capital, you can ask for the Boeng Kak lake and there you will find some hostels with their terraces over the lake. We where few days in the Lazy Fish, having rooms from 2 Euros per person and cafeteria, and great views over the lakes, sunsets are awsome. Good places to spend three days around the city.

How to get to Cambodia

Cambodia´s flag.

If you are coming from Thailand, the best way is by plane, but you better watch out your wallet!. Best economic way is taking the bus heading to the border, from Bangkok and when you get to Cambodia you take a Cambodian´s bus. The one we took left us in Siem-Reap, and it took around 12 bus hours paying 10 Euros per person. It is worth to see the landscape from the ground. If you are traveling in monsoons season, you better ask in the bus station for the roads, because the often close because of the rain, and the travel would be difficult!.
